Winemaker Aníbal Coutinho has just presented the 2012 harvest of his iconic Escondido wine. It is the fourth edition of this nectar, made from grapes from a 15 year old vineyard, planted between Sintra and Mafra, which benefits from all the advantages of a microclimate strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. This place, where the grapes that produce Hidden wine are born and grown, is a small farm that is difficult to access, a privileged leisure and vacation place for the Ávila-Coutinho family. Fernando Ávila, architect and father-in-law of the winemaker, is the author of the label, indirectly relating to the culture of the vineyard and wine by authoring the architecture project of UTAD – University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, the only institution in the country where the degree in oenology is taught.
“This wine comes in years when quality can come out of the family and be shared with some oenophiles. The smallness of the vineyard dominated by the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional and Syrah varieties gives rise to a garage wine that has been cared for by Vera Moreira, Quinta do Gradil winemaker, by António Ventura, Parras Vinhos consultant winemaker of the Year 2015 by Revista de Vinhos), and by myself », says Aníbal Coutinho, about the reasons that led him to create this wine ten years ago.
Escondido 2012 aged for 24 months in three barrels, two of American oak (one new and one in the second year), the other of French oak (in the second year) and was subjected to regular testing for over a year after its traffic jam. Designed in the image of Bordeaux viticulture and oenology, given the similarities between the two Atlantic terroirs, Escondido 2012 has a limited and numbered edition of 500 75 cl bottles and 100 150 cl magnum bottles. At the “Essência do Vinho” event the first Escondido of 2006 was chosen as the favorite in a blind tasting that brought together some of the national wines of excellence.
Aníbal Coutinho describes Escondido 2012 as a medium garnet-colored wine, with spicy and mentholated aromas typical of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot Bordeaux varieties, chocolate-colored fruit from the Mediterranean Syrah, and citrus bergamot from our Touriga Nacional. The set wrapped by sweet spices and earthy and smoky notes. Elegant mouth, with juicy and very refreshing and gastronomic extension. With high bottle storage capacity, the winemaker recommends serving between 16 and 18 degrees centigrade.
